Chief Justice and President of the Supreme Court Martha Koome has mourned the death of Senior Assistant Inspector General of Police (SAIG) Lazarus Opicho, describing him as a distinguished officer who dedicated his life to public service.
In a condolence message, Koome conveyed her sympathies to the Inspector General of Police, the National Police Service, Opicho’s family, friends and colleagues following his death.
Opicho served as the Commander of the Security of Government Buildings and VIP Protection Unit before his death.
Koome said Opicho held a special place in the history of the Judiciary, having served as the founding Head of the Judiciary Police Unit established in 2021.
The unit was created to provide dedicated security for Judiciary personnel, court users and judicial premises across the country.
“As the founding Head of the Judiciary Police Unit, he helped lay its institutional foundations and contributed to the development of a more coordinated and responsive approach to the security needs of the Judiciary,” Koome said.
She described Opicho as committed to duty and professional, saying his contribution helped strengthen the security architecture of the Judiciary.
“We shall remember him for his commitment to duty, his professionalism and the contribution he made to strengthening the security architecture of the Judiciary,” she said.
Koome extended her condolences to Opicho’s family and colleagues, saying his life was dedicated to serving the country and its people.
“May the Almighty God grant his family the fortitude to bear this profound loss and may the soul of SAIG Lazarus Opicho rest in eternal peace,” the Chief Justice said.
