Police officers in Kajiado County came close to apprehending two robbery suspects on Saturday, November 16, after a high-speed chase that ended with the suspects’ vehicle crashing into a ditch.
The two men, believed to be behind a string of residential break-ins in the area, were pursued by police along the Nairobi-Namanga Road near Kajiado Township.
The chase ended when the suspects’ Toyota Probox swerved off the road, its tire punctured, and the vehicle rolled multiple times into a nearby ditch.
Despite the accident, the suspects managed to flee on foot, leaving behind their car and a stash of stolen items packed in sacks.
When police impounded the vehicle, they discovered a variety of stolen goods, including two 43-inch televisions, two mobile phones, a laptop, a set of keys, two metal bars, and several number plates bearing different registration numbers.
The pursuit was launched after members of the public tipped off police about a recent robbery in the area.
According to witnesses, the vehicle carrying the suspects was speeding when it suffered a tire puncture, causing the driver to lose control and crash.
Locals who witnessed the dramatic scene commended the police for their swift action in recovering the stolen items, but expressed concerns over the suspects’ escape. Several residents urged the authorities to continue searching for the thieves.
“These criminals have been terrorizing us.
They just stole from one of our neighbors, and when they were spotted, they were chased, but they managed to escape into the nearby estates,” said one local witness.
Another added, “The vehicle was speeding when the tire blew, causing it to roll several times into the ditch.”
This incident comes less than a month after a similar crime spree in Meru, where detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) arrested three suspects connected to a series of robberies and killings in Imenti North and Buuri West Sub-Counties.
The suspects, including a police officer stationed in Marsabit County, were apprehended after a thorough investigation.
The DCI recovered an M16 rifle, two magazines, and 67 rounds of ammunition from the suspects.
DCI officers, working with the Criminal Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB) and the Operation Support Unit (OSU), had been monitoring the suspects for several weeks before their capture.
