Four individuals suspected of highway robbery were arrested today in Emuhaya sub-county, Vihiga, following a botched theft involving a transit truck transporting cement from Machakos to Busia along the Kisumu-Busia road.
The incident unfolded around 6 a.m. when the 55-year-old driver of a FAW truck owned by Mombasa Cement Ltd noticed several people clinging to the left door of his vehicle.
As the door swung open, the suspects began throwing bags of cement out of the truck.
Despite the driver’s desperate honking to deter the thieves, they continued their assault, dragging the cement bags into nearby bushes.
Realizing the gravity of the situation, the driver halted the truck, prompting the robbers to close in on him.
Luckily, officers from the Embali Police Station, who were patrolling in the vicinity, heard the commotion and quickly responded to the scene.
Although the suspects attempted to flee into the nearby undergrowth, one of them, identified as 33-year-old Bernard Ochoyi Omari, was apprehended while still in possession of one of the stolen 50kg bags.
A subsequent search of the area and surrounding homes led police to recover a total of nine cement bags.
Notably, one of the bags was discovered at the residence of a suspect named Boaz Amunabi Joshua, also known as Spear.
During their investigation, officers uncovered additional suspicious items, including a blood-stained machete, 21 mosquito nets, a sack of wheat, and various other suspected stolen goods.
In addition to Omari, three other suspects Francis Khulali, 70, Anthony Etale, 22, and Winnie Odongo Ombati, 28 were also arrested during the operation.
They are currently in police custody and are expected to be brought before a judge on Friday, November 1.
