CNN is going to reduce about 100 jobs to make its operations simpler and make its online presence stronger, as per an internal memo seen by Reuters on Wednesday.
Mark Thompson, who is the CEO of CNN Worldwide, explained in the memo how they plan to reorganize things.
They want to bring together the teams that gather news and handle digital content.
They also want to improve how they make videos and introduce new news products that people can pay to use.
“We are working to build a digital business worth more than a billion dollars for the future,” Thompson said in the memo.
Thompson, who used to work at the New York Times and BBC before joining CNN last October, wants to make CNN work better at a time when fewer people are watching TV.
He wants to do this by doing more things online.
Later this year, CNN will start a new service on CNN.com where people can pay to get news.
This is just the first of a few new paid services CNN is planning, which will include news about lifestyle and other topics.
CNN will also create something called the TV Future Lab. This lab will make programs for the Max streaming service and also turn TV programs into things people can watch online.
CNN started streaming on Max, which is owned by Warner Bros Discovery, last year.
Thompson also talked about some changes to how CNN makes news.
He said they will start planning and pitching stories all in one place.
They will also start a new job called “story manager.” This person will take care of everything from the start of a story to when it gets shown on TV or put online.
Thompson will talk more about these plans at a meeting with staff on Wednesday.
