Patrick Mariru, the Principal Secretary for Defence, hosted a meeting with Nam Sangkyoo, the Counselor General from the Korean Embassy in Kenya, at the Defence Headquarters in Nairobi.
The discussion focused on several topics, notably the upcoming Responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the Military Domain (REAIM) Summit scheduled to take place in Seoul, Korea, this September.
The Summit, which is being co-hosted by the Netherlands and Singapore, aims to advance ethical AI practices in military applications and encourage global cooperation among governments, military bodies, and academic institutions.
The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) will represent Kenya at the Summit, according to an update from the KDF.
During the meeting, PS Mariru expressed his appreciation for Korea’s enduring partnership with Kenya.
He underscored the significance of the Defence Cooperation Agreement (DCA) signed in 2022, which enhances collaboration in defense, industry, trade, and other sectors.
“We are grateful for the ongoing support Korea has extended in various fields,” Mariru stated.
He also identified potential new areas for collaboration, such as shipbuilding, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), emerging technologies, and research and innovation.
These efforts are aimed at strengthening the capabilities of the Kenya Defence Forces and supporting national development.
Nam Sangkyoo, who also serves as Korea’s Deputy Ambassador to Kenya, recognized Kenya as a key strategic partner and reaffirmed Korea’s dedication to strengthening their bilateral relationship.
The meeting was also attended by Brigadier Samuel Kimani, Chief of Strategic Plans and Policy at the Defence Headquarters, Kim Yejoo, Senior Research Officer at the Korean Embassy, and other senior officials from both the military and the embassy.
