A court petition has been filed calling for the Cabinet Secretary for Sports to appoint a caretaker committee for Athletics Kenya.
The petition, submitted by Casper Cheruiyot, Evans Siro, John Mwania Wanzau, and Edward Mburu Mwaura,
Argues that the extended lack of a caretaker committee has led to a notable decline in Kenyan athletics, marked by poor performance and diminishing motivation among athletes.
The petitioners are seeking a mandamus order to compel the Sports Cabinet Secretary to appoint the caretaker committee.
Furthermore, they are requesting a court mandate to amend the Athletics Kenya (AK) Constitution and to hold new elections within 90 days.
They emphasize that the Sports Cabinet Secretary has the authority to remove officials from sports organizations and argue that urgent governance reforms are needed within AK.
The petition highlights that the current Executive Committee is only in place due to a temporary stay order from the Court of Appeal.
The petitioners claim that this interim arrangement should be replaced by the formation of a caretaker committee and the organization of new elections, as required by the stay order.
They accuse the Executive Committee of consistently failing to establish a caretaker committee, despite clear court instructions to do so.
