Fire break at Nyayo Girls Secondary School in Kalama Sub-County, Machakos, has resulted in the complete destruction of three dormitories, causing extensive damage to the school’s property.
The incident occurred on Sunday night while the students were engaged in night classes, which fortunately avoided any injuries.
Senior Chief Douglas Mutavi of Lumbwa Location confirmed that the blaze completely engulfed the dormitories, leaving nothing salvageable from the structures.
As a consequence, over 100 students had to sleep in classrooms overnight and awaited their release to return home on Monday.
Mutavi noted that the fire’s origin is under suspicion, with authorities believing that it may have been deliberately set by some of the students.
According to reports, these students allegedly returned to their classes after the fire started to conceal their involvement.
In connection with the incident, two girls have been detained and are currently held at Konza Police Station.
The police have launched a thorough investigation to ascertain the cause of the fire and to determine whether any other students or individuals were involved in the incident.
The focus of the investigation will be on uncovering the circumstances that led to the fire and ensuring that those responsible are held accountable.
The devastating loss has left the school community reeling, with significant concerns about the immediate impact on students and the school’s infrastructure.
As the investigation continues, efforts will be made to provide support and assistance to the affected students and to assess the extent of the damage to the school facilities.
