Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has seemingly put an end to discussions surrounding the leadership of the Mt. Kenya region, affirming former President Uhuru Kenyatta as its unquestioned leader.
In an exclusive interview on Citizen TV, Gachagua reflected on their contentious relationship during the election period, noting that he and Uhuru were at odds due to the latter’s support for Raila Odinga, while Gachagua backed William Ruto, who ultimately won the presidency.
Gachagua admitted that he had ridiculed Uhuru for his choice to support Odinga, whom he previously criticized.
He pointed out that despite their past disagreements, Ruto has now welcomed Odinga into the government and praised him, echoing what Uhuru had done earlier.
The Deputy President acknowledged that he may have been wrong about Uhuru and expressed regret for the disrespect shown towards him.
He offered an apology to Uhuru and his family for the harsh treatment they received during the campaigns.
“I, along with the people of Mt. Kenya, have no issues with Raila Odinga. It’s interesting to note that a leader from Mt. Kenya doesn’t need to reiterate his stance.
Uhuru Kenyatta’s declaration on this matter stands firm. As of now, we are quite content with Raila Odinga,” Gachagua stated.
He continued, “We realize now that it was unfair to criticize Uhuru for suggesting Raila was a good man.
Since Ruto has also recognized Raila’s value, I felt it was necessary to apologize to Uhuru and his family. We had no justification for disrespecting him.
Uhuru Kenyatta remains the undisputed king of the mountain.”
