The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has apprehended an ICT officer from a local university for allegedly soliciting a bribe of Sh50,000 to rectify an error in a student’s examination results.
The officer was accused of demanding this amount to correct an anomaly in the student’s academic records, which had been inaccurately updated in the university’s portal.
According to the EACC, the student is set to graduate in December 2024 and had originally achieved a degree classification of Second Class Honours Upper Division.
However, it is claimed that her classification was mysteriously altered to Second Class Honours Lower Division.
Concerned about the unexpected change in her marks, the student approached the ICT Department for clarification.
The officer reportedly informed her that the issue could only be resolved upon payment of Sh50,000 as a “tea” bribe.
Unable to afford the sum, the student decided to report the matter to the EACC.
Following a thorough investigation and verification of her claims, the EACC launched an operation and arrested the suspect within the university grounds after he accepted Sh30,000, which was part of the bribe he had demanded.
The arrest occurred on Friday evening, and the officer was subsequently taken to the EACC Integrity Centre for processing before being booked at Kilimani Police Station.
This incident highlights ongoing efforts by the EACC to tackle corruption within educational institutions, aiming to ensure integrity and transparency in the academic process.
