Ovidio Guzman Lopez, the son of the Mexican drug lord known as “El Chapo,” has declared that he is not guilty of drug-related charges in a United States court.
This comes after Guzman Lopez, aged 33, was transferred from Mexico to the United States.
In a US District Court in Chicago, Guzman Lopez officially denied charges of drug trafficking, money laundering, and possessing firearms, as stated by the Justice Department.
Nicknamed “El Raton” or “The Mouse,” he is accused of being part of a conspiracy to transport various illegal drugs such as cocaine, fentanyl, heroin, methamphetamine, and marijuana into the United States.
His father, Joaquin Guzman, who is now 66 years old, was extradited to the United States back in 2017.
In 2019, he was found guilty of leading what was believed to be the world’s largest drug cartel.
After El Chapo’s conviction, several of his sons, collectively known as the “Chapitos” or “The Little Chapos,” took control of the Sinaloa Cartel, according to US authorities.
Three of Joaquin Guzman’s other sons have also faced charges in the United States.
Ovidio Guzman Lopez was arrested by security agents in the city of Culiacan in Sinaloa on January 5.
Following his arrest, cartel members engaged in acts of violence, including setting vehicles on fire.
This incident resembled the significant clashes in 2019 when Ovidio Guzman was briefly detained but then released to prevent further bloodshed.
Guzman Lopez’s extradition to the United States occurred shortly after his father’s wife, Emma Coronel Aispuro, was released from a halfway house in California.
She had served nearly two years of a three-year prison sentence for drug trafficking and money laundering.
It’s worth noting that Coronel is 34 years old and is not the mother of Guzman Lopez; she is a dual US-Mexican citizen.
