Lang’ata Member of Parliament Felix Jalang’o Odiwuor has stirred controversy for remarks made during his visit to Zambia, where he appeared to belittle the country’s infrastructure.
While touring Zambia, Jalang’o shared a photo on his X account standing next to a lion sculpture, accompanied by a caption that mocked Zambia’s supposed poor infrastructure compared to Kenya’s.
He urged Kenyans to appreciate their country more, suggesting that conditions were worse elsewhere.
Jalang’o wrote, “Traveling out of Kenya will make you appreciate Kenya more… We might not be where we want to be but we are really ahead in the region. Zambia…Maina let me tell you!”
This sparked a strong reaction from both Kenyans and Africans, with many expressing shock and disappointment.
Some criticized him for disrespecting Zambia while being a guest in the country. Micere Nyaga, a Kenyan, initiated the criticism by sharing photos of dilapidated roads in Lang’ata, questioning what there was to appreciate.
Former radio host Rapcha The Sayantist called Jalang’o “an ignorant politician from a third world country making fun of another third world country.”
Traveler Christopher Haslett defended Zambia, listing several positive aspects of the country’s infrastructure.
Renowned educationist and activist Dr. Wandia Njoya expressed dismay at Jalang’o’s actions, urging him to show respect to fellow Africans.
She criticized Jalang’o’s disregard for diplomacy, highlighting the importance of solidarity among African nations.
As responses poured in, Dr. Wandia Njoya quoted Binyavanga Wainaina’s opinion piece, emphasizing the challenges faced by Kenya’s professional class and the disparities within the country.
This incident has sparked broader conversations about African unity and mutual respect among nations.
