Five foot bridges are set to be constructed on the 27 kilometer long Nairobi Expressway.
This will relieve many pedestrians who have been suffering while trying to cross the fortified and busy highway.
The Kenya National Highways said they are committed to improving on the safety of pedestrians.
The authority argued it has planned a phased construction of additional fivepedestrian footbridges between Mlolongo and Airtel/Southern Bypass Interchange, and along the Westlands Section between Aga Khan School and the junction to Brookside Drive.
“Pedestrian footpaths are also included in the scope of works to be undertaken,” the authority said.
Lack of these foot bridges has led to many injuries and death on pedestrians who dangerously use the road.
It added the project company and developer of the Nairobi Expressway, MOJA Expressway Company Limited through their Engineer, Procure and Construct (EPC) Contractor CALE Infrastructure Construction Company, is progressively working to repair sections of the prior existing existing Mombasa Road where damage was directly caused during the construction of the Nairobi Expressway.
These repair works under the responsibility of MOJA will be completed before the end of this year, 2022.
However there are damages to the existing road and road reserve at various locations that were caused by relocation works, including water and sewer pipes relocation, power lines relocation and ICT fibre cables relocation works, which were carried out by the respective Government Utility Companies, that are being attended to by KeNHA and the respective utility companies.
“These relocation activities affected the side walks and pedestrian footpaths as well as road side drainage on the existing road.”
KeNHA has committed funds for these repair works, and continues to coordinate with the government utility companies to ensure they effectively attend to their assigned repair works.
The damaged parts of the road has frustrated many road users for long amid calls for repairs.
