Ford Foundation Refutes Claims Of Funding Protests In Kenya

The Ford Foundation, a U.S. philanthropic organization, has firmly denied accusations that it has been funding the ongoing anti-government protests in Kenya.

This denial follows a letter from Kenyan government official Korir Sing’Oei, the Principal Secretary for Foreign Affairs, to Ford Foundation President Darren Walker.

The letter expressed serious concerns about the foundation’s recent financial activities in Kenya.

Sing’Oei noted that from April 2023 to May 2024, the Ford Foundation provided a total of USD 5.78 million (approximately Sh.752 million) to several organizations, including Africa Uncensored Limited, the Kenya Human Rights Commission, and Transparency International.

The letter suggested a link between this funding and the increase in anti-government demonstrations, prompting the Kenyan government to seek clarification and accountability from the foundation.

In response, the Ford Foundation, via its website, emphasized its commitment to transparency and the support of civil society efforts worldwide.

The foundation acknowledged receiving the letter from Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and reiterated its strict grant-making processes and its mission to promote social justice and equitable development.

“As a charitable foundation with a global presence, our grantmaking is transparent and readily available on our website, www.fordfoundation.org.

This includes a database showing where our funds go, as well as highlights from our rich history in East Africa and around the world,” said the Ford Foundation.

The foundation also stated, “While we continue to acknowledge the right of Kenyans to peacefully advocate for a just and equitable country, we repudiate any actions or speech that are hateful or advocate violence against any institution, individual, or community.”

The Ford Foundation remains dedicated to its work in the region, aiming to help Kenyans unlock and access new opportunities.
