Oloo Aringo, a notable former cabinet minister and long-serving Member of Parliament for Alego Usonga, has died.
The announcement was made on Friday, November 1, by the current MP, Sam Atandi, via a post on Twitter. Aringo passed away while receiving medical care at Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi.
“With profound sorrow, I share the unexpected news of the passing of Oloo Aringo, former Cabinet Minister and MP for Alego Usonga,” Atandi wrote.
“He left us this evening at Aga Khan Hospital.”
Aringo was a prominent figure in Kenyan politics, representing Alego Constituency during two distinct periods: from 1974 to 1988 and again from 1997 to 2002.
He is widely recognized for his tenure as Minister for Education under President Daniel Arap Moi, where he played a crucial role in the implementation of the 8-4-4 education system, a significant reform that reshaped Kenya’s educational framework.
He was also a strong advocate for establishing Moi, Maseno, and Egerton universities as public institutions and was instrumental in promoting technical institutes throughout the country, greatly influencing educational development in Kenya.
Eliud Owalo, Deputy Chief of Staff in the Executive Office of the President, expressed his condolences, calling Aringo “an articulate and insightful Cabinet Minister, known for his passionate debates during his time as MP.”
He shared his shock at the news, recalling a recent discussion they had on national development. “Earlier this year, on January 14, I had the privilege of visiting Hon.
Oloo Aringo at his home in Nairobi, where we engaged in an extensive conversation on various important issues,” Owalo reflected.
Aringo’s academic achievements were distinguished; he attended St. Mary’s School in Yala and later graduated with a first-class honors degree in history, economics, and politics from the University of Nairobi.
He also received a Commonwealth scholarship to pursue a Master’s in international comparative education at the University of Toronto in Canada.
His contributions to Kenyan politics and education will leave a lasting impact, and he is remembered for his dedication to public service.
