Former Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) Chairperson Macharia Njeru has announced his intention to seek the presidency in the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during an interview on Monday, October 5, Njeru said his extensive experience in both the private and public sectors would distinguish him from Kenya’s previous presidents.
Njeru said no former Kenyan president had accumulated substantial experience across both sectors before taking office.
He also outlined plans to cut government waste and reduce what he considers unnecessary public spending if elected President.
The former IPOA chairperson criticised the frequent use of supplementary budgets, arguing that the government could significantly reduce expenditure without compromising the delivery of its functions.
According to Njeru, spending on supplementary budgets could be reduced by more than 60 per cent while allowing government operations to continue effectively.

Njeru served as the inaugural chairperson of IPOA from 2012 to 2016. He also previously served as Vice Chairperson of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).
His announcement adds to the growing list of political figures positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 presidential contest.
Meanwhile, Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah has made changes to his presidential exploratory committee as he continues preparations for the 2027 election.
In a gazette notice dated Friday, October 2, Omtatah appointed David John Bwakali as chairperson of the committee and Dancan Otieno Onyango as deputy chairperson.
Omtatah also extended the committee’s mandate until November 2026.
