The recent abduction of Joseph Machiri, former Member of County Assembly (MCA) from Kamacharia, is now suspected to be connected to a sh. 1.5 billion bank fraud case.
Investigations are focusing on how Machiri’s son, David Machiri, a bank manager, may have used his credentials to facilitate fraudulent transfers while on medical leave.
The incident drew significant attention after armed men raided Machiri’s home in Thogoto, Kiambu County, on Sunday and took him into custody.
Concurrently, CCTV footage captured another group of heavily armed men breaking into Machiri’s father’s home in Mathioya, Murang’a County, searching for unspecified items.
The footage shows a white car arriving at the Mathioya residence, followed by six masked men who disabled the power supply and security cameras.
Claiming to be police officers, they conducted a thorough search of the property where Machiri was with his family but found nothing before abducting him.
Machiri’s brother, Kenneth Mwangi, reported hearing commotion and encountering the armed men outside, who identified themselves as police.
The family was left shaken as the intruders departed with Machiri after an extensive search.
This abduction occurred about 12 hours after David Machiri was taken by individuals believed to be security officers in Thogoto.
David, who was previously charged with defrauding a bank of sh. 1.5 billion, had been released on bail despite the prosecution’s request for extended detention.
As the case nears its hearing, Joseph Machiri has been named a person of interest, adding to the family’s distress.
The family’s lawyer, Ndegwa Njiru, has called on authorities, including the Acting Inspector General and Interior Cabinet Secretary Prof. Kindiki, for information on the whereabouts of both father and son.
Joseph Machiri was released more than 24 hours later and left on a roadside, but his son David’s whereabouts remain unknown.
