A family in Khwisero, Kakamega County, is mourning the death of an 11-year-old Grade Six pupil who drowned while swimming at an open water catchment site in Emutemo Village.
The deceased, a pupil at Mulwanda Primary School, reportedly drowned on November 6, 2026, while swimming with his friends.
The boy left home at around 1.30 pm in the company of his friends and headed to the water catchment site in Mulwanda Location, police said.
He reportedly dived into the water but failed to resurface, prompting his friends to raise the alarm.
Members of the public rushed to the scene and retrieved his body, which was found lying beside the water catchment area.
Police officers from Khwisero Police Station, accompanied by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), visited the scene and documented the incident.
The body, which had no visible external injuries, was later moved to Sonak Hospital mortuary, where it is being preserved pending a postmortem examination.
The incident has once again highlighted the dangers posed by open water catchment sites, particularly to children.
