The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) Saturday announced the busy Haile Selassie Avenue will on Sunday 19 and 26 February be closed to pave for the “strengthening” of the Central Bank of Kenya – City Square Post Office footbridge.
The authority the closure will commence on Saturday, February 18 midnight to February 19 midnight and the same shall be repeated on Saturday 25 to 28.
Motorists are advised to use alternative routes during the closure including Uhuru Highway, Moi Avenue, and Kenyatta Avenue.
“We regret any inconvenience caused and urge members of the public to cooperate as we strive to enhance urban mobility.”
The area is one of the busiest as it connects parts of the city to railways, Technical University, South B, and Mukuru slums.
Pedestrians use it to connect as traffic on Haile Selassie Avenue is usually busy and dangerous to them.
Visitors to City Square, Government Press and other government offices across Haile Selassie Avenue use the bridge.
The move is likely to cause a heavy traffic jam as the road is key in easing the same.
The footbridge was damaged by a trailer carrying an excavator about a year ago and the defunct Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) had closed it for renovation.
Then, a temporary steel structure was erected to support the bridge as renovation plans on the footbridge were underway.
