High Court Denies Interim Orders In DP Gachagua Impeachment Motion

The High Court has denied a request for interim orders that would have halted the National Assembly’s impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

This ruling follows a petition filed by Cleophas Malala, who sought to suspend the discussions regarding Gachagua’s potential removal from office, citing concerns over the legality and fairness of the process.

However, the court concluded that there was insufficient grounds to intervene at this stage, allowing the National Assembly to continue with the impeachment proceedings as scheduled.

This decision highlights the complex legal landscape surrounding the impeachment process, which has emerged as a significant political issue.

As the National Assembly prepares to deliberate on the matter, attention is focused on how developments will unfold in the coming days.

A mention of Malala’s case is set for October 7, where further discussions and legal arguments will take place.

The ruling adds to the political challenges faced by Gachagua, with accusations against him including threatening the president by demanding an sh 8 billion exit package for delivering Mount Kenya votes to President Ruto.

He faces ten charges in total, which include allegations of amassing sh 5.7 billion from undisclosed sources, misusing his office to divert highway project materials to a private hotel, leaking state secrets, sponsoring disruptions during protests, and promoting tribalism through divisive rhetoric.
