Jubilee Party Deputy Leader Jeremiah Kioni has expressed interest in taking over the party’s leadership from retired President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Kioni made the announcement on Tuesday, September 15, following Uhuru’s declaration that he was prepared to hand over the party’s leadership.
In a statement, the former Ndaragwa MP said he was offering himself for the position in line with Jubilee’s constitution and established procedures.
He emphasised that the transition should be conducted through an open, transparent and lawful process.
Kioni further maintained that the party’s next leader should be elected through its established structures rather than appointed.
He said the Jubilee Party National Delegates Convention (NDC) should determine Uhuru’s successor, noting that party leadership was entrusted to delegates through an election.
According to Kioni, Jubilee’s status as a national party and former ruling party makes it necessary to uphold democratic processes in selecting its leadership.
He added that the party’s tradition of electing leaders had been central to its establishment and should continue guiding the transition.

Kioni also commended Uhuru for his leadership of both the party and the country, expressing confidence that the former President would continue providing guidance during the transition.
The development follows an announcement from Uhuru’s office on Tuesday that he was ready to facilitate the handover of the Jubilee Party chairmanship after a High Court ruling upheld Section 6 of the Presidential Retirement Benefits Act.
The ruling provided legal clarity on the transition of retired presidents from formal political party leadership.
Uhuru welcomed the decision, saying it should not be interpreted as limiting his political activities but as a reflection of Kenya’s democratic maturity.
He also affirmed his willingness to oversee a transparent and lawful transition in accordance with Jubilee’s constitution and governing procedures.
