Agriculture and Livestock Development Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe has urged Members of Parliament to fast-track the passage of key agriculture Bills and legislative amendments before the end of 2026 to prevent delays as the country heads into the 2027 General Election campaign period.
Speaking during a breakfast meeting with the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Agriculture, Kagwe said Parliament should prioritise pending and new legislative proposals that are critical to reforms in the agriculture and livestock sectors.
He warned that failure to conclude the legislative process before the campaign season could stall crucial reforms and force the next Parliament to restart the process.
The Cabinet Secretary also directed officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development to provide MPs with comprehensive, accurate and well-researched information to support informed debate, effective policy-making and timely responses to supplementary questions in the House.
Kagwe said evidence-based data was essential in shaping sound legislation and ensuring Parliament enacts laws that support the government’s development agenda and accelerate the transformation of Kenya’s agriculture sector.
He emphasised the need for close collaboration between the Executive and Parliament to ensure critical reforms are enacted without unnecessary delays.
The meeting brought together members of the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Agriculture, led by Chairperson John Mutunga and Deputy Chairperson Brighton Yegon.
Also present were committee members Mpuru Aburi, Muthoni Monicah, Patrick Osero, Ruth Odinga, Sabina Chege, Justice Kipsang Kemei, John Makali Okwisia and David Kiplagat, alongside senior officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development.
