Western Kenya is going to get more electricity thanks to the Cabinet’s approval of the Gogo Hydropower Redevelopment Project by the Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen).

The Gogo Hydropower Redevelopment Project is in Migori County, near River Kuja.

They plan to make the dam produce more electricity, increasing it from 2 megawatts to 8.6 megawatts.

KenGen’s CEO, Eng. Peter Njenga, thinks this project is great for the environment.

It helps Kenya reach its goal of using 100% clean energy.

He said, “The Cabinet’s approval of the Gogo Hydropower Redevelopment Project is a momentous milestone for the people of Western Kenya and a testament to the government’s commitment to regional development.”

This project not only signifies progress in the energy sector but also holds the promise of economic growth, job creation, and improved livelihoods for our communities while contributing to our clean energy goals,” he added.

The Cabinet approved the project during a meeting led by President William Ruto at the State Lodge in Kisumu.

This is expected to make sure we have a steady supply of electricity and boost the economy in Nyanza and Western Kenya.

“Other power plants in the Western Kenya region include; the Sondu Miriu Hydropower Plant, generating 60MW, Sang’oro Hydropower Plant with a capacity of 20MW, and the substantial Turkwel Hydropower Plant, boasting a remarkable 105MW capacity,” noted the KenGen boss.

With this approval, the Gogo Project will not only improve the power supply but also help the economy in Nyanza and Western Kenya.
