Kenyan Content Creators Can Now Earn Revenue From Facebook Videos

Meta, the owner of Facebook, has introduced new features allowing Kenyan content creators to earn revenue from short-form videos through advertisements.

On Tuesday, Meta announced the rollout of two monetization options: ‘instream advertisements,’ which appear before, during, or after videos on Facebook, and ‘ads on reels,’ which accompany short videos on the platform.

Kenya has become one of the 12 African countries where Meta shares ad revenue with creators, joining Egypt, Nigeria, Rwanda, Ghana, and Seychelles.

This move aims to support Kenya’s vibrant creative industry and elevate global standards for creativity.

Moon Baz, Meta’s global partnerships lead for Africa, the Middle East, and Turkey, stated, “This expansion will empower eligible creators in Kenya to earn money while setting high creative standards globally.

Meta’s family of apps is becoming the go-to platform for all creators.”

The initiative follows a visit by Meta’s President of Global Affairs, Nick Clegg, to Kenya in March, where he met with President William Ruto.

Originally planned to launch by June on both Facebook and Instagram, the monetization features are currently available only on Facebook.

Instagram creators in Kenya will need to wait for a future update.

To be eligible for the new monetization program, creators must have at least 5,000 followers on Facebook and achieve over 60,000 minutes of total watch time in the last two months.

Facebook remains the most widely used social media platform in Kenya, with 52 percent of Kenyans aged 15 and above actively using it, according to recent statistics by the Communications Authority of Kenya.

WhatsApp follows with 48.5 percent usage, while Instagram is used by 11.5 percent of the population.

Prior to this, only YouTube and X (formerly Twitter) offered revenue-sharing from advertisements to creators.
