Kenyan Troops Intensify Patrols In Eastern DRC Amid Rising Attacks

The Kenyan Quick Reaction Force (KENQRF), in collaboration with United Nations Organisation Stabilisation Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) personnel, has stepped up patrol operations in Eastern DRC in response to a recent surge in attacks by illegal armed groups.

The KENQRF is operating jointly with troops from the Indonesian Rapid Deployment Battalion and the Republic of South Africa Battalion (RSABATT), focusing on protecting civilians in the volatile Ituri Province.

Commander Lieutenant Colonel Simon Seda commended the efforts of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), noting significant improvements in the security situation since the mission’s recent escalation.

“Since the operation began a few weeks ago, the security situation in the area has significantly improved,” said Lt Col Seda.
“Feedback from local elders, women, and youth indicates that the community feels safer and is now able to sleep peacefully, thanks to the ongoing patrols that we jointly conduct round the clock.”

KENQRF troops have intensified joint area domination patrols in Komanda, Ngeleza, Bandiamosi, Bamande, Irumu, and other surrounding villages within the area of operation. These patrols, conducted alongside the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC), aim to disrupt and neutralise negative forces operating within Ituri territory.

The strengthened operations come amid an uptick in violence from armed groups targeting civilians and infrastructure in the region.

In recognition of their outstanding service, the Fourth Contingent of KENQRF was awarded United Nations service medals on August 29, marking the completion of their one-year tour of duty. The medal parade was presided over by MONUSCO Force Commander, Lieutenant General Ulisses de Mesquita Gomes.

“We have witnessed your resilience in this challenging environment,” said Lt Gen Gomes.
“Your engagement with the local community through cultural exchanges, key leadership engagements, and religious outreach programmes has built trust and fostered relationships with the community, while demonstrating the compassion of being a peacekeeper.”

Expressing appreciation during the ceremony, Lt Col Seda thanked MONUSCO and local partners for the recognition.

“These medals are not just a symbol of service but also a reminder of the sacrifices we have made jointly with the people of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the local security forces, and our partners within MONUSCO,” he stated.

“We are humbled by the trust placed in us and proud to have flown the Kenyan flag high under the banner of the United Nations.”

KENQRF remains committed to supporting MONUSCO’s mandate to protect civilians and restore peace in eastern DRC.
