Kenyans residing in the United States are preparing to stage a protest at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) headquarters in Washington DC, calling for accountability following what they claim are deaths linked to IMF-supported austerity measures in Kenya.
Scheduled for Saturday, the demonstration also seeks answers regarding the disappearance of individuals amidst youth-led protests against the Kenyan government.
“We hold the IMF responsible for the deaths of young Kenyans due to what we see as neocolonial policies that ensnare Kenya in debt,” said a spokesperson from the Kenyan Diaspora.
They accuse the IMF of exacerbating economic hardships and using excessive force against peaceful demonstrators, accusing the organization of disregarding human rights and democratic freedoms.
The Diaspora community has criticized the IMF for remaining silent during the unrest in Kenya, despite their policies sparking significant controversy.
Earlier in May, the IMF had predicted unrest following the controversial Finance Bill’s passage and urged President William Ruto to enforce its measures firmly.
However, Ruto decided against signing the bill into law after protests resulted in the deaths of at least 41 people, with many more sustaining injuries.
