Kevin Kang’ethe, a Kenyan accused of murdering his girlfriend in the United States, has been denied bail by a U.S. court.
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) in Kenya confirmed the news via social media, stating that Kang’ethe remains in custody in the U.S. after pleading not guilty to the murder charges.
Kang’ethe was extradited from Nairobi to the United States on September 1, 2024, following a successful extradition process led by Director of Public Prosecutions Renson M. Ingonga, OGW.
The suspect had previously fled the U.S., where he is accused of killing his girlfriend at an airport last year.
On September 3, 2024, Kang’ethe appeared before the Supreme Judicial Court of Suffolk at Pemberton Square in Boston.
The court denied him bail and ordered that he be held in custody pending further proceedings.
The prosecution, led by Assistant District Attorney Mark Lee, argued against bail.
The court was informed that Kang’ethe and the victim, Margaret Mbitu, had been involved in a tumultuous romantic relationship marred by allegations of domestic violence.
A preliminary hearing for the case is scheduled to take place in the Homicide Division on November 5, 2024, at 2:00 p.m.
