Kirinyaga County’s Crackdown On Illegal Alcohol: 70 Bars Cleared For Operation In Mwea

In the aftermath of a devastating incident where 17 lives were lost due to the consumption of illicit alcohol in Kangai and Kandongu villages, Kirinyaga County has taken decisive action to ensure public safety.

Recent reports reveal that out of the 330 bars in Mwea West, only 70 have been granted permission to resume operations.

Deputy County Commissioner Lawrence Omondi disclosed that before the tragedy, the region had 330 functioning bars.

However, stringent measures have been implemented, with only a fraction of these establishments meeting the required standards for operation.

Kangai ward, the epicenter of the alcohol-related fatalities, has witnessed a significant reduction in the number of operational bars.

From 68 bars previously operating in the area, only 18 have been given clearance, indicating a substantial crackdown on non-compliant establishments.

Omondi emphasized the commitment of the authorities to safeguard public health, particularly in preventing the exposure of children to illicit substances.

The closure of bars in affected villages underscores the seriousness with which the county addresses the issue of illegal alcohol and drugs.

Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, responding promptly to the tragedy, ordered the closure of bars county-wide during the burial ceremony for the victims.

The subsequent reopening last week followed a meticulous verification process aimed at ensuring compliance with safety standards.

The Deputy County Commissioner reiterated that no bar would be permitted to operate without undergoing rigorous inspections and obtaining the necessary licenses for the year 2024.

Collaboration with relevant agencies, including the county government and NACADA, underscores the multi-faceted approach adopted to tackle the problem effectively.

Emphasizing the collaborative effort in the crackdown, Omondi stressed that no bar would operate without meeting health standards and obtaining the necessary 2024 license.

Cooperation with the county government and relevant authorities such as NACADA remains pivotal in ensuring the sustained success of the operation.
