Nairobi’s traffic is set to face major disruptions this Sunday due to the upcoming bike race.
The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has issued a notice indicating that several major roads will be closed for the event.
Roads affected include Lang’ata Road, Uhuru Highway, Haile Selassie Avenue, Bunyala Road, and Lower Hill Road. These closures will be in effect from 6 AM to 2 PM.
KURA has expressed regret for any inconvenience this may cause and is urging motorists to plan their journeys accordingly.
“We encourage drivers to use alternative routes and adhere to the directions provided by traffic police and marshals,” the notice stated.
The event, known as the ‘Grand Nairobi Bike Race,’ is a prominent fixture on the East African sporting calendar, attracting cyclists from Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Eritrea, France, and the United States.
Now in its third edition, the race is expected to feature around 2,500 participants.
Competitors will have the opportunity to choose from six categories, including a 60 km main race, a 2 km kids’ race, a 48 km para-cycling race, a 12 km family fun ride, a 48 km black mamba ride, and a 60 km team race consisting of six riders.
The primary objective of the race is to encourage as many people as possible to take to the streets of the capital on their bikes.
