Kenyan Hollywood star Lupita Nyong’o’s admirers are standing by her following her recent breakup with US-based TV host Selema Masekela.
Nyong’o took to Instagram to share her feelings, speaking openly about what she’s going through.
“I find myself in a season of heartbreak because of a love suddenly and devastatingly extinguished by deception,” she wrote on her Instagram post, without mentioning anyone’s name.
Masekela has chosen to remain silent, even disabling comments on his Instagram account.
Lupita Nyong’o, a renowned Hollywood actress who made history in 2014 by becoming the first Kenyan to win an Oscar and the second African after South African actress Charlize Theron, publicly revealed her relationship with Masekela in December last year.
In a video introducing their relationship, Nyong’o captioned, “We just click!” However, she has since removed that post.
Selema Masekela, the son of South African jazz legend Hugh Masekela, also expressed his affection for Nyong’o in a separate social media post, saying, “Hearts are synched. My whole and actual love Lupita Nyongo.”
In her breakup post, Nyong’o expressed her desire to “publicly dissociate myself from someone I can no longer trust” and shared that her love was “extinguished by deception.”
The news of their separation surprised many fans who had seen their relationship as a heartwarming moment, especially after Masekela had once asked his followers for advice on how to strike up a conversation with the Black Panther star.
Several of Nyong’o’s fans and even some of her celebrity friends have left supportive comments in response to her post.
Nyong’o has built a substantial following over the years through her captivating roles in Hollywood hits like Us and Black Panther.
Oscar-winning filmmaker Ava DuVernay encouraged Nyong’o, saying, “We stand by you with love and sisterhood.
Miracles are all around you.
Let’s recognize them with confidence and faith.”
Many fans have also praised Nyong’o for her courage in openly sharing a personal and sensitive matter with the world.
In her post, Nyong’o expressed her hope that “sharing her experience may be helpful to someone else going through heartbreak, encouraging them not to escape the pain but to embrace the wisdom that comes with it.”
Support for Masekela has been notably scarce.
