Machakos Governor Seeks Public Input On Muguka Ban

Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti has initiated public participation to discuss the potential ban on Muguka in the county.

Speaking during a church service in Machakos on Sunday, she emphasized the negative impact the stimulant has had on society, particularly on the youth.

Governor Ndeti stated, “I’m coming to you (Machakos residents) to carry out a public participation exercise on Muguka because I cannot ban it on my own. I need to engage you to agree on the way forward.”

She highlighted the importance of community involvement in addressing the issue, noting that Muguka has significantly affected many young people.

“If every church can work with the youth, we will make a difference. That’s why I came up with the idea of Machakos Youth Service, where we will train and rehabilitate those addicted.”

Governor Wavinya’s initiative aligns with a broader national effort to curb the sale and consumption of Muguka, which has been linked to societal decline.

The movement gained momentum when Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir announced a ban on the stimulant due to its widespread consumption, including among schoolchildren.

Following Nassir’s lead, Kilifi Governor Gideon Mung’aro and officials in Kwale also declared bans.

Additionally, the northeastern counties of Wajir, Garissa, and Mandera have indicated their intention to join the coastal counties in imposing similar restrictions.

However, Agriculture Cabinet Secretary (CS) Mithika Linturi has pointed out that county-level bans on Muguka are not legally binding.

He explained that Muguka is classified as a scheduled crop under the Crops Act 2013 and the Miraa Regulations 2023, rendering such bans invalid at the county level.

Governor Ndeti’s call for public participation underscores her commitment to addressing the Muguka issue through community consensus.

As the discussions unfold, the residents of Machakos will play a crucial role in determining the future of Muguka within their county.

The collaborative effort aims to find a sustainable solution to mitigate the adverse effects of the stimulant on the youth and society at large.
