A joyful Sunday morning swim turned into a heartbreaking tragedy when a 13-year-old boy drowned in the Chepkulo River in Bomet.
The incident was confirmed by Chepalungu sub-county police chief Phanton Analo, who identified the deceased as Bethwel Kiprono, a Grade Seven pupil at Kamundugi Primary School.
Bethwel Kiprono had ventured to the river with a group of friends for a recreational swim. According to Analo, the boys were enjoying their morning when disaster struck.
Kiprono found himself struggling in the water and quickly submerged.
His friends made desperate attempts to save him, but tragically, they were unable to reach him in time.
“The other boys tried to save him, but he drowned before they could help him,” Analo reported, highlighting the desperate efforts made by Kiprono’s companions to rescue him.
The boy’s sudden disappearance under the water sent shockwaves through the group, leading to immediate calls for help.

The school’s administration and teachers have expressed their deep condolences to Kiprono’s family and friends, describing him as a bright and cheerful boy who was always eager to learn and participate in school activities.
Parents and guardians in the area have been urged to ensure their children are safe and supervised, especially when engaging in activities near bodies of water.

Local authorities have also stressed the importance of water safety education for children and communities, advocating for increased awareness and preventive measures to avoid such tragedies in the future.
They are calling on the government and non-governmental organizations to support initiatives aimed at teaching swimming and lifesaving skills to children, which could be crucial in preventing similar incidents.
