Maseno University students have taken to the street to protest against the Killing of fellow students during an anti-government protest on Monday.
Speaking to the press, the students said the third-year student was shot when they were peacefully demonstrating.
“We were peacefully protesting, nothing had been vandalized nor looted when he was shot,” one of the students said.
Police said William Mayange was among a group of students who had joined the Azimio protests which later turned violent after the protesters invaded a supermarket in Maseno town.
The student was shot in the neck and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Coptic hospital where he had been rushed.
Other students denied the claims by police of raiding the supermarket.
Police said the students overpowered the security officers who had run out of teargas canisters.
As a result, police say the student was shot in the neck after the officers started firing live bullets to repulse the intruders who had allegedly invaded the supermarket.
Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o has urged the police to quickly investigate the killing of the Maseno University student during the Monday anti-government protests.
“It is unfortunate that instead of using tear gas or rubber bullets, the police chose to fire live ammunition at the students,” the governor stated.
Nyong’o demanded that the police who fired the killer bullet be arrested and prosecuted as soon as possible.
