A massive fire in Moi’s Bridge, Uasin Gishu County, on Saturday morning has destroyed property worth millions of shillings, with a suspected gas explosion believed to be the cause.
The blaze engulfed several businesses and shops in the market area, causing extensive damage.
Videos circulating online show a huge inferno consuming kiosks and nearby structures as thick smoke billowed into the sky.
Firefighters from the county are on the scene, working to contain the fire.
While no casualties have been reported, the presence of gas canisters in the aftermath has raised fears that a gas explosion triggered the devastating blaze.
Some reports suggest the fire may have originated at a gas depot before spreading to surrounding shops, including an M-Pesa outlet and a food store, where dark smoke can be seen pouring from the roofs.
Moi’s Bridge, a busy town located just outside Eldoret on the road to Kitale, has been left reeling from the destruction.

The town is also located near the crossing of the Nzoia River, a popular landmark in the region.
This incident is drawing comparisons to the horrific gas explosion in Nairobi’s Embakasi area last February, where six people lost their lives, and nearly 300 others were injured when a gas truck exploded.
That explosion also destroyed homes, businesses, and vehicles in its vicinity.
Investigations revealed that the gas plant involved in the Embakasi incident was operating illegally, having been denied permits by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) due to safety concerns.
The incident in Moi’s Bridge serves as another grim reminder of the dangers posed by poorly regulated gas storage facilities, sparking calls for increased safety measures and stricter enforcement of regulations.
