Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi has challenged politicians seeking the presidency in 2027 to outline practical solutions to Kenya’s economic and social challenges rather than relying on political slogans.
Speaking to the media in Kisumu on Wednesday, September 16, Mbadi called on journalists and voters to scrutinise presidential aspirants and demand clear explanations of how they intend to implement and finance their campaign promises.
Mbadi said candidates should be pressed to explain what they would do differently if elected, particularly on matters concerning the economy and public finances.
He cited public debt as one of the issues requiring detailed discussion, questioning proposals by some politicians to reject repayment of debts they consider questionable.
The CS said such proposals should be accompanied by explanations of their potential implications for investors, financial institutions and holders of government securities.
He questioned what would happen to investors who purchased government bonds if a future administration refused to honour payments on the grounds that Treasury records were improperly maintained.
Mbadi also challenged critics of the Affordable Housing Programme to present alternative proposals for addressing the country’s housing shortage.
He similarly questioned opponents of the Social Health Authority, urging them to explain what alternative measures they would introduce to improve access to healthcare.
The Treasury CS maintained that political discourse should focus on competing policy proposals rather than merely opposing government initiatives.
On employment, Mbadi said presidential aspirants should provide concrete strategies for creating jobs and demonstrate how the proposed programmes would be funded.
He added that the 2027 presidential contest should give Kenyans an opportunity to examine candidates’ positions on the economy, public debt, employment, healthcare, housing, agriculture and education.
Mbadi further urged journalists to ask political leaders challenging questions about their plans and what they would do if entrusted with public office.
Mbadi Weighs In on Nyanza Politics
The CS also addressed political developments in the Nyanza region, claiming that residents had increasingly rallied behind President William Ruto’s administration.

Mbadi dismissed suggestions that political merchandise worn by crowds during Ruto’s tour of the region reflected opposition to the President.
He argued that wearing caps and T-shirts associated with different political parties did not necessarily indicate the political allegiance of those attending the events.
Mbadi said ODM-branded merchandise had been visible at several gatherings, adding that the presence of different party colours should not automatically be interpreted as hostility towards Ruto.
His remarks come amid ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 General Election, as Ruto’s administration seeks to strengthen its political ties with leaders in Nyanza.
