The Ministry of Health is preparing to launch nationwide training sessions for the rollout of Social Health Authority (SHA) services.
The launch, led by Health Cabinet Secretary Deborah Barasa, will also include Principal Secretary for Medical Services Harry Kimtai, Director General for Health Patrick Amoth, and the Chair and CEO of SHA.
They will outline the roadmap for transitioning to a digitized healthcare system, which will officially begin on October 1.
By this date, all civil servants are required to register with the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF), which replaces the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) that expired on June 30, 2024.
Government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura recently highlighted the importance of public education and awareness about this shift.
As of September 3, 2024, 861,101 Kenyans have registered with SHA, and 9,792 health facilities,
Including 2,008 public and 7,784 private and faith-based institutions, have been licensed by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC).
Registration for SHIF is available through a self-registration USSD code (*147#), the website http://sha.go.ke, Community Health Promoters, or at NHIF offices and other designated points.
SHIF contributions are set at 2.75% of gross salary for formal sector employees and 2.75% of income for informal sector workers, based on means testing.
The national and county governments will cover premiums for low-income individuals, prisoners, and other vulnerable groups.
The new system brings several improvements, including full digitization, biometric verification, independent accreditation, and an expanded benefits package.
Premiums will be reduced from Sh500 to Sh300, and the program offers universal coverage, emergency care, and enhanced support for the very poor and severely disabled, as per the Persons with Disabilities Act of 2003.
SHA cardholders will have access to all health facilities, including public, private, and faith-based institutions.
