Moscow has unveiled a significant statue honoring Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s celebrated leader and symbol of reconciliation.
This new monument, situated in a lesser-known area of southwestern Moscow, stands as a testament to the enduring friendship between Russia and South Africa, and potentially with other African nations.
On September 9, 2024, Moscow marked an important cultural milestone with the unveiling of the Nelson Mandela statue.
The monument recognizes Mandela’s pivotal role in championing human rights and the struggle for liberation across Africa.
Crafted by sculptor Mikhail Baskakov and supported by the Russian Military-Historical Society and the Moscow Government, the statue is positioned at the junction of Michurinsky Prospect and Ramensky Boulevard.
In conjunction with the unveiling, the Russian-African Club of Lomonosov Moscow State University produced a film detailing Mandela’s life and achievements.
The film presents Mandela not only as a remarkable leader and national icon but also as a global symbol of resilience and courage.
It highlights his enduring principles of justice and goodness, which continue to inspire people worldwide.
Mandela is affectionately known as “Madiba,” meaning “the beloved one,” in recognition of his significant impact.
Earlier in July 2023, in celebration of Mandela’s 105th birthday, the Moscow House of Nationalities hosted a photo exhibition documenting his life.
The exhibit covered crucial phases of Mandela’s journey, from his youth and political activism to his presidency and final years.
The statue’s inauguration was attended by African diplomats, leaders from African diasporas, Russian officials, and cultural figures, further emphasizing the deepening ties between Russia and South Africa.
This new monument reinforces the enduring legacy of Nelson Mandela and the strong bond between the two nations.
