A police constable attached to the office of Igembe South MP John Paul was arrested in Meru County after he was allegedly found in possession of a firearm and ammunition following a shooting incident on Kiengu-Kiutune Road.
The officer was arrested on Tuesday night following a tip-off linked to an earlier shooting incident reported along the Kiengu-Kiutine Road.
Police had launched investigations after two gunshots were heard along the Kiengu-Kiutine Road, with a spent 9mm cartridge recovered at the scene.
The incident was reported on September 22, 2026 by a resident who told police that he had heard the gunshots at about 2pm while inside his house.
The resident said he went outside to establish what was happening and encountered two middle-aged men cutting shrubs along the roadside to feed six goats that were being transported in a whitish Nissan Datsun 1200 pickup whose registration details were not clearly visible.
Witnesses said two men became abusive when the resident questioned them about the source of the gunshots.
Police visited the scene at Kabuchere Village, Baibariu Sub-location, Kawiru Location.
A spent 9mm cartridge was recovered during the scene examination.
No injuries were reported, while the motive and circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear.
Police said the vehicle linked to the incident was reportedly driven away towards the Kiutine-Garbatula Road as investigations continued.
A team later intercepted a whitish Nissan Datsun 1200 at Kiengu Shopping Centre.
The officers reportedly found the driver appearing drunk and conducted a search of the vehicle, during which they recovered a Beretta pistol loaded with 13 rounds of 9mm ammunition.
The driver was subsequently identified as a police officer who is attached to the office of Igembe South MP John Paul.
Police disarmed the officer and placed him in custody at Mulingene Police Station, where he was being held pending further administrative action.
Police investigations are continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting and whether the firearm recovered from the officer was connected to the incident.
