The Nairobi County Government has closed a popular kiosk hotel in the Central Business District (CBD) following a surprise inspection that revealed serious hygiene violations, including the shocking discovery of food being stored in a public toilet.
The closure is part of an intensified crackdown on street vendors and eateries that fail to meet essential food safety and hygiene standards.
The alarming findings came to light on Friday during an unannounced inspection aimed at addressing unsanitary practices among food vendors in the city.
Nairobi County’s Environment Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria, along with public health and environmental inspectors, uncovered the disturbing breaches at the kiosk hotel situated near the Bus Station area.
Known for its kebabs, eggs, and smokies, the establishment was found to be operating under deplorable conditions, prompting its immediate shutdown.
Inspectors reported numerous issues, including blackened cooking oil, strong unpleasant odors, and an overall filthy environment, raising serious concerns about food safety.
The most troubling discovery was the use of a nearby public toilet for storing food trays, a practice that poses significant health risks.
“Closure is necessary to prevent any potential health hazards and to protect the well-being of our community,” said Mosiria.
He underscored the importance of maintaining proper hygiene practices throughout the city and warned that the crackdown would continue.
Mosiria emphasized the collective responsibility for cleanliness in Nairobi, urging all residents, hawkers, and vendors to adhere strictly to health standards.
“Everyone has a role to play in ensuring that Nairobi remains a clean and healthy environment. We must all uphold high standards of hygiene to safeguard public health,” he stated.
This incident has heightened concerns about food safety in Nairobi’s CBD, with increasing reports of unsanitary practices among street vendors, including the inappropriate storage of food.
City Hall has committed to intensifying efforts to eliminate these hazardous practices and ensure strict compliance with public health regulations.
