Nairobi Hosts Sixth UN Environment Assembly

Nairobi is hosting the Sixth United Nations Environment Assembly.

More than 5,000 representatives from all 193 United Nations countries, including top leaders, will gather at the UN Complex in Gigiri, Nairobi, Kenya.

The assembly, known as UNEA-6, will last for five days and cover various topics under the theme of “effective, inclusive, and sustainable multilateral actions to tackle climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.”

It will end with a Ministerial Declaration outlining future steps.

A major focus will be on the concerning rise in wasteful plastic use, which worsens the climate crisis.

Scientists point out that over 99% of plastics are derived from fossil fuels, which are responsible for 86% of CO2 emissions in the last decade.

This highlights the urgent need for agreements like a Plastics Treaty and a Fossil Fuel Treaty to phase out oil, gas, and coal production.

Kenya, committed to multilateralism, has ratified numerous Environmental Agreements to enhance environmental protection and sustainable development.

UNEA-6 occurs as the world faces unprecedented environmental challenges, affecting every part of the globe.

The assembly, the highest-level decision-making body on environmental issues, will address critical matters, focusing on the triple planetary crisis: climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss.
