Nine of the 21 students who lost their lives in the Hillside Endarasha Academy fire will be laid to rest today, Thursday.
Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga announced that these nine pupils will be buried in their respective homes following a memorial service.
The burials will continue on Friday for ten additional students, while the remaining two will be interred on Saturday.
Governor Kahiga stated, “Once we leave here, we will proceed to the nine homes for the burials. We will do the same for another ten pupils tomorrow, and on Saturday, we will conclude with the last two.”
The governor also revealed that the committee overseeing the response to the tragedy, which occurred on September 5, will hold its final meeting on Monday.
He made these remarks during an interdenominational memorial service for the 21 victims, which was attended by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
The tragic fire engulfed the dormitory of the boarding school, where many boys were sleeping at the time.
On September 5, over 150 students were present in the dormitory when the flames erupted.
The memorial service for the 21 victims is taking place at Mwiga Stadium in Nyeri, as previously announced by the government.
This devastating incident has left the community mourning, and the memorial service serves as a somber reminder of the lives lost in the fire.
As families prepare for the burials, the focus remains on honoring the memories of the young students who tragically perished.
