Retired President Uhuru Kenyatta has expressed profound sorrow over the loss of 21 pupils from Hillside Academy, describing them as “full of potential and hope for the future.”
In a condolence message delivered by DAP-K party leader Eugene Wamalwa, Uhuru extended his sympathies to the families affected and the broader school community.
“May God grant you the strength, comfort, and peace needed to cope with this unimaginable loss,” he stated.
Additionally, he wished for a swift recovery for those still receiving treatment, praying for healing as they navigate the physical and emotional challenges following this tragic incident.
The interdenominational memorial service, which is being conducted by various religious leaders, is a poignant occasion for reflection and remembrance.
As part of the funeral arrangements, nine of the 21 pupils who tragically died in the Hillside Endarasha Academy fire will be buried today, Thursday.
Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga announced that these nine students will be laid to rest in their respective homes following the memorial service.
He indicated that ten more will be buried on Friday, with the remaining two interred on Saturday.
“I would like to inform you that after today, we will proceed to the nine homes for the burials, followed by another ten tomorrow, and we will conclude with the last two on Saturday,” Kahiga stated.
Furthermore, the governor mentioned that the committee overseeing the response to the tragedy, which took place on September 5, will hold its final meeting on Monday.
The memorial service in Nyeri was also attended by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
The fire swept through the dormitory of the boarding school, claiming the lives of boys who were asleep at the time.
At the time of the fire, over 150 pupils were present in the dormitory.
