One Protestor Shot Dead In Confrontation With Protesters After Fatal Accident In Nambale, Vihiga


One man was shot dead and two others injured in a violent protest against a fatal accident involving a police vehicle in Nambale, Vihiga County.

Four police officers were injured in the confrontation that happened after a police car hit and killed 12-year-old boy Promise Nanjule in an accident.

The locals were angered by the police move to take the injured boy to the police station after the accident in the Kisoko area on Monday, May 15.

Police explained one of their salon cars was headed for Mumias from Nambale when it hit the boy killing him.

The officers picked up the injured boy but instead of taking him to hospital, they took him to the local police station.

The officers explained they took the injured boy to the station to make a report instead of taking him to the hospital.

It was while at the station that they said they realized he had succumbed to the injuries.

According to police, it was then a mob gathered at the station demanding the body be released to them.

The locals said the officers were pursuing a car carrying contraband goods when the vehicle hit the grade six pupil killing him.

At the station, the mob attacked and vandalized the station before setting the car that was involved in the accident on fire.

It was then reinforcements were sent from other stations in the area to help control the situation.

Police say it was in the process that one Dancun Oduor, 35 was shot and killed while two others were shot and injured.

The injured were taken to hospital where they are admitted in serious but stable condition.

Four police officers complained of being injured in the chaos after being hit by flying objects.

Order was finally restored in the town following the arrival of more police officers.

Police headquarters say they have sent teams to investigate the matter with the intention of establishing the truth and taking action.
