The Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) has formally approved and certified the change of name of Muungano Party (MP) to The Mwananchi Party (TMP).
The name change followed a special resolution by the party and was subsequently approved by the Registrar of Political Parties, leading to the new name being entered into the official Register of Political Parties.
In a statement on Tuesday, September 29, People’s Renaissance Movement (PM) Party Leader Caleb Amisi congratulated The Mwananchi Party on receiving its certificate, describing the development as an important step for Kenya’s multiparty democracy.
Amisi welcomed TMP into what he described as a push for national renewal, new leadership and political transformation.
He also expressed his party’s willingness to work with The Mwananchi Party in areas of shared interest, particularly on advancing their respective ideological positions.
The development comes days after Embakasi East MP Babu Owino addressed questions surrounding the Linda Mwananchi name and the establishment of The Mwananchi Party.

On September 24, Owino shared a letter from the ORPP outlining the events leading to the change of name.
He said representatives of Linda Mwananchi had visited the ORPP on August 4, 2026, seeking clarification over the use of the name.
According to the documents shared by the MP, the name change was subsequently effected on September 10.
The letter, signed by Registrar of Political Parties John Cox Lorionokou and addressed to the Secretary General of The Mwananchi Party, also addressed an objection that had been raised against the proposed name change.
The registrar said the objection, filed by Lawrence Nzunga on August 30, was later withdrawn after the issues raised had been resolved.
Nzunga formally withdrew the objection on September 8, confirming that his concerns had been addressed.
The ORPP subsequently confirmed that the change of name had taken effect in accordance with Section 20(5) of the Political Parties Act, Cap. 7D.
