At least ten people are recovering in the hospital after a fight broke out at Nyabigena Adventist Church in South Mugirango, Kisii County.
The clash happened between two groups disagreeing over the church’s leadership.
A video of the July 20th incident went viral on social media, showing two women in turbans arguing inside the church.
Reports indicate that the groups involved are from the Adventist Church and the Nairobi Cosmopolitan Conference (NCC), which split from the Adventist Church.
Both groups still hold services on the same grounds every Saturday.
The argument between the women quickly drew in several men who tried to force one of the women out of the church.
She resisted and was attacked by the other woman.
The fight soon escalated, with both groups using plastic chairs as weapons.
The altercation continued for a few minutes before moving outside the church.
Penwel Nyambane, an NCC member, claimed that the violence was instigated by people sent to remove them from the church.
“The other group should not have come here.
They sent goons to chase us away and attacked us,” Nyambane said.
Martha Bosibori, another participant, stated, “NCC is not part of the Adventist Church, but they have been using our grounds for years.”
Both groups plan to address the issue again this Saturday, despite leaders being ordered to meet with the Deputy County Commissioner to resolve the conflict.
Residents are calling for government intervention to address the situation.
