Police and DCI officers in Busia County are currently searching for suspects involved in a drug trafficking operation who managed to evade capture on Thursday.
The suspects, who were being pursued by security personnel, escaped, leaving behind a large quantity of cannabis estimated to be worth 1.8 million shillings.
The abandoned drugs were found on the roadside, wrapped in 1,800 coils, each 45 centimeters in length.
According to a statement from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the traffickers were initially traveling on motorbikes along Butula Road toward Matungu.
However, they altered their route and used Benga University Road to unload their illegal cargo, which was concealed among second-hand clothes.
This incident follows a recent arrest by police about a week ago, where two individuals, including a 17-year-old, were apprehended while transporting marijuana valued at 1.32 million shillings.
The drugs, which weighed 44 kilograms, were seized on the Nambale-Busia road.
In a previous significant bust on June 6, Busia police intercepted seven sacks containing 451 kilograms of cannabis, worth approximately 13 million shillings.
These seizures highlight ongoing efforts and challenges in combating drug trafficking in the region.
The search for the fleeing suspects continues, with authorities working to prevent further illegal drug activities and bring those responsible to justice.
