President William Ruto on Thursday led the nation in celebrating the 61st Jamhuri Day at Uhuru Gardens, where he highlighted his government’s achievements in housing, healthcare, and digital transformation.
Addressing the gathered delegates and citizens, Ruto expressed his openness to criticism, as long as it is rooted in facts.
“I have no problem with discourse, criticism, and alternative proposals.
In fact, I welcome them and listen to feedback in order to learn, improve, and become better,” he said.
However, Ruto took issue with false criticism spread through digital platforms, warning against the growing influence of disinformation.
He emphasized the negative impact of fake news, stating, “We are at the stage in social development when digital technologies have immense capacity to amplify disinformation, magnify fake news, and distort facts beyond all recognition.
If we give in to these emerging negative trends, we shall pay with our freedom, democracy, and development.”
The president further cautioned that engaging in untruthful discourse could lead to division and undermine national unity, democracy, and development.
“If we do not engage in truthful discourse, we breed negativity that turns us into a people estranged from unity and sabotages development,” he added.
Ruto also pointed to tangible progress under his leadership, highlighting reduced living costs, increased agricultural productivity, and improved services through the Taifa Care program.
“If some persist in the culture of reckless negativity, how long will they deny facts that are visible to all? What will they say when we begin handing over keys to new affordable housing units?” he asked.
Earlier, on December 3, Ruto criticized those who oppose his projects, describing them as driven by an “evil spirit” of opposition.
“There is an evil spirit of opposing everything… affordable housing, cow vaccinations, university models, healthcare,” he said.
“They are now even opposing church donations. What is this surely?”
