The leadership of the Matatu Owners association (MOA) has indicated that it is consulting with its members with the aim of reducing fares by up to 10 percent.
The chairman of the union, Albert Karakacha, on Monday, April 15, 2024, was quoted as saying that the reduction in fares is a way to provide relief to Kenyans following the government’s move to reduce the price of fuel to a large extent.
“We have contacted our members in Nairobi, Mombasa, West, Rift Valley and Central Kenya about the need to reduce fares by 10 percent. After building consensus, we will make an official announcement to reduce this issue soon,” Mr. Karakacha explained.
“We realized that without passengers our business cannot flourish. This is why we have asked our members to accept the idea of reducing the fare to the level of 10 percent,” he added.
Mr Karakacha said that after the leaders of all MOA branches agreed on the reduction of fares, the same leaders will ensure that the action is implemented in their areas.
He suggested that apart from the government reducing the price of fuel, it should take more steps and ensure that the prices of spare parts and car wheels are also reduced.
