Ronald Ngala Utalii College Gets New Kitchen To Train Chefs

Ronald Ngala Utalii College (RNUC) in Kilifi County has received a modern kitchen with capacity to prepare meals for up to 3,000 diners, strengthening both its catering services and practical training for aspiring chefs.

The facility will be used to prepare meals for students while also serving as a practical training centre for trainees pursuing culinary arts and other hospitality-related courses.

Tourism Principal Secretary Julius Bitok, who unveiled the facility, said its installation had taken into account environmental protection, safety and sustainability.

“We have a kitchen that will promote clean cooking and that is very safe for our students’ learning experiences. We are deliberate about protecting our environment even as we equip the college with the best available equipment,” Bitok said.

The PS said the college was established with a vision of becoming a specialised training institution offering tourism, hospitality and maritime-related programmes tailored to both local and international labour markets.

The programmes currently offered include hospitality, housekeeping, front office operations and culinary arts.

The college is also engaging the Maritime Shipping Company on possible support for maritime and seafaring training, as it seeks to position itself as an institution supporting Kenya’s growing blue economy.

“If you want to study maritime processes, you must study seafaring. That is why this institution has been set up as a premium institution, one of its own kind,” Bitok said.

Located in the Vipingo area of Kilifi County, RNUC opened its doors last month and has already enrolled about 300 students.

The institution has a projected capacity of 4,000 students when fully operational.

President William Ruto is expected to officially open the college later this year.

Construction of the institution began 13 years ago before its eventual operationalisation.
