Russian athletes will not be participating in track and field events at the upcoming Paris Olympics, according to Sebastian Coe.
The head of World Athletics emphasized that the decision remains unchanged, despite the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) recent announcement allowing Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete as neutrals in individual events, provided they don’t support the war on Ukraine.
“The most important thing is that everybody is beginning to recognize that the autonomy and independence of international federations to make these judgements is really important.
We made a judgement that we believe was in the best interest of our sport,” stated Coe in a conference call.

Coe, a British double Olympic gold medalist, maintained that World Athletics will stick to its original stance.
However, he acknowledged the dynamic nature of global situations, remarking, “the world changes every five minutes; the situation could change.”
Coe revealed the existence of a working group monitoring the sports landscape and stated that it would guide the Council on potential changes in circumstances that might lead to the lifting of the ban.
While the ban on Russian athletes in Olympic athletics remains in place, Coe acknowledged the ever-changing world and hinted at a possibility of reconsideration based on evolving circumstances.
