The Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM) has endorsed the National Dialogue Report (NADCO), emphasizing its significance in mitigating political tensions within the country.
Supreme Council chairman Alhajj Hassan Ole Naado Sunday said the council is committed to supporting measures that contribute to national unity and peace.
“Secondly, would like to declare that as a Council we endorse the National Dialogue Report because we do not desire to see the country go back to the brink of the abyss that was characterized by loss of the life and destruction of property,” Alhaj said.
However, while supporting the overall objective of the NADCO, SUPKEM highlighted specific concerns that, in its view, were not adequately addressed in the document.

Among the key issues raised by the council are the cost of living, the audit of the 2022 electoral process, and the establishment of new state offices.
Alhaj underscored the need for an independent, impartial technical team, similar to the 2008 Kriegler Committee, to conduct a comprehensive and honest audit of the 2022 elections.
This measure, according to the council, would help address lingering disputes and ensure transparency in the electoral process.
Addressing concerns about the cost of living, SUPKEM proposed specific recommendations aimed at alleviating economic burdens on citizens.
These proposals include a reduction of Value Added Tax (VAT) on petroleum products from 16 percent to 8 percent.
Additionally, the council called for the elimination of the housing levy, following a recent court ruling deeming it unconstitutional.
Further recommendations include a reduction in the Road Maintenance Levy, a decrease in the Petroleum Development Levy, zero-rating VAT on basic food items, and a request to revert the turnover tax to levels specified in the Finance Act of 2022.
